With Recent Celebrity Deaths, We Try to Make Sense of the Loss
By Donna Porter, Yahoo! Contributor Network
Many Americans seem to hold the belief that celebrities die in threes, a topic that has resurfaced with the passings of Tim Russert and George Carlin–with bloggers speculating on who the third celebrity will be. Some believers of the superstition that “bad things happen in threes” note that the “celebrities die in threes” hex has been fulfilled, by listing lesser known celebrity figures. Is this morbid? Maybe not, as the meaning of three spans beyond celebrity deaths in defining our life and world.

So I get a call to do a live interview on a Japanese radio program, ZIP FM from Tokyo. Hello World! I taught mathematics and computer science in Chiyoda Cho, Yamagata Gun, Hiroshima, Japan at Lehman-Hiroshima College. I enjoyed my time in Japan. At the end of the interview I annouced the next song, which was of course, Three is the Magic Number by Blind Melon. Many thanks to ZIP FMm Tokyo, Japan!

On July 8, 2009 I had a very fun interview with Maurice Drummond and Rich Gould for 590 The Fan KFNS (http://www.kfns.com/martinradio.aspx), a FOX affiliate. Look at the Rewind Section for the audio. They we’re hillarious. At the end they were talking about the Manchurian Candidate and being brainwashed by things in threes. I was great fun being interviewed by these guys. Three Cheers for Martin Radio!
Three strikes, three primary colors, three goals for a hat trick, three meals a day, the Holy Trinity– do things in our lives really manifest in threes, or are these observations just ways for our brains to simplify and group complex information? As author, administrator and . . . I forget the third, of The Book of Threes at threes.com, I recently did three, that’s right . . ., three interviews on celebrity deaths in threes. Mostly people are interested in why deaths occur in threes.
After these interviews I came to the conclusion that putting deaths into a threeness is the way we master our own mortality. We reflect on these deaths and create a memory by clustering concepts into threes. It gives us a chance to complete our relationship with our celebrities and move on.
